Associate Professor Michael Talbot

Dr Talbot has been a pioneer of complex Bariatric Surgery in NSW and has for the last decade had the highest caseload of these patients in the state. He performed Australasia’s first robotic bariatric and oesophageal surgical procedures.
Dr Michael Talbot is a Specialist in Upper Gastrointestinal Surgery, Bariatric Surgery, therapeutic Endoscopy/ERCP, Oesophageal Physiology and Reflux. After graduating from the University of Otago in 1992 he completed his Internship in Wellington, NZ before commencing residency and surgical training at St Vincent’s Hospital, Sydney.
In 2001 he graduated from Advanced Surgical Training in Sydney South Eastern rotation and then went on to complete further subspecialty training as the Lister Lecturer in Surgery at the Glasgow Royal Infirmary UK. He commenced consultant practice at St George and Wollongong Hospitals in 2003 as a UNSW Senior Lecturer in Surgery. In 2005 he consolidated his public hospital appointment to St George Hospital and currently consults at a number of other sites in Sydney and Wollongong.
During his career, Dr Talbot has been a pioneer of complex Bariatric Surgery in NSW and has for the last decade had the highest caseload of these patients in the state. He performed Australasia’s first robotic bariatric and oesophageal surgical procedures. Dr Talbot offers the full range of endoscopic and surgical treatments for neoplasia in the oesophagus and stomach, and runs NSW’s longest-established High-Resolution Oesophageal Diagnostic Lab. He is one of very few clinicians in Australia experienced in newly introduced endoscopic therapies to manage early tumours and oesophageal functional disorders.
Dr Gary Yee
MBChB FRACS
Dr Yee is a specialist-trained Upper Gastrointestinal and Bariatric Surgeon with a strong interest in laparoscopic surgery and research. He has been working as a consultant surgeon at St George and Sutherland hospitals since 2013.
Dr Yee is a specialist-trained Upper Gastrointestinal and Bariatric Surgeon with a strong interest in laparoscopic surgery and research. Born in Malaysia, he undertook primary and secondary education in Brunei and Singapore before commencing Medicine at Sydney University.
After completing medicine in 1994, Dr Yee completed his general medical residency before starting work in surgical research in Australia. After time spent in surgical training in Scotland, he joined the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons Training program in Sydney in 2005 and qualified as a General Surgeon in 2010. Subsequent to this he has spent time as a senior registrar in Bankstown Hospital and training in Upper GI surgery in Malaysia.
After being selected for Subspecialty training by the Australia and New Zealand Gastro-oesophageal Surgery Society (ANZGOSA) he undertook an Upper GI fellowship at Newcastle’s John Hunter, and Sydney’s St George Hospitals in 2011-12. Since 2013 he has been working as a consultant surgeon at St George and Sutherland hospitals. He operates at the Sutherland Hospital, Kareena Private Hospital, St George Private Hospital and the Sydney Private Hospital. He is available for surgical consultations at our practice Upper GI Surgery, at St George Private Hospital.
Dr Jason Maani
BHB MBChB FRACS
Dr Maani is a fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons and continues his research pursuits through UNSW. He provides personal care for his patients, combined with the best of modern medicine.
Dr Maani is a fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons. Upon completing his undergraduate degree in medicine at the University of Auckland, Dr Maani settled in Australia and began his specialist training in General Surgery at the Royal Melbourne Hospitals and
Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre in Victoria.
After qualifying as a general surgeon he commenced sub-specialist training in Upper Gastrointestinal surgery at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital in Perth WA. Following this he pursued two years of training in Advanced Laparoscopic Upper GI and Bariatric Surgery as well as Research Fellowship, at St George Public & Private Hospitals in Sydney where he now practises as a consultant.
He is a member of ANZGOSA and OSSANZ and continues his research pursuits through UNSW. He keeps abreast with developments in the field of Minimally Invasive Upper GI surgery, attending conferences both in Australia and Internationally. He aims to provide unhurried personal care for his patients, combined with the best of modern medicine. He is available for surgical consultations at our practice Upper GI Surgery, at St George Private Hospital.

Dr Jennifer Matthei
BSc(med) MBBS FRACGP
Dr Matthei is a vocationally trained General Practitioner with a special interest in women’s health, obesity, nutrition and mental health.
Dr Matthei is a vocationally trained General Practitioner with a special interest in women’s health, obesity, nutrition and mental health. Dr Matthei obtained her medical degree from the University of New South Wales and graduated with honours in 1994. She completed her internship at St George Hospital and then completed her residency at Nepean Hospital and The Children’s Hospital in Westmead. Dr Matthei underwent her GP training in Elderslie, followed by Gilgandra and Dubbo, obtaining her FRACGP in 1998.
Dr Matthei practised as a GP in Elderslie and Lugarno before settling in a practice at Brighton-le-Sands in Sydney for 12 years. During this time she undertook mental health CBT/ACT training, completing courses with the Blackdog Institute and Russ Harris.
Dr Matthei provides women’s pastoral training and marriage counselling alongside her husband at Campus Bible Study. Dr Matthei spent 9 years as a school governor at St Catherine’s School (Waverley). She is a loving mother to four children which keeps her busy in her spare time, alongside her love of cooking fresh produce from their vegetable garden.
